Bridging Distances and Distancing through Online Improvisation
From its start, Kidscape Productions has been committed to the wellbeing and flourishment of its family. The Kidscape family is large. It includes all students, the parents, and families of every student, other educational professionals involved in the students’ journeys, the Kidscape instructors, the Kidscape founders (who are also instructors) and even Pax Love Joy, the company dog.
With the ongoing social lockdown surrounding COVID-19, the Kidscape family just got a whole lot bigger! Driven by the goal to achieve social connection and encourage social wellbeing, Kidscape has launched several online workshops and classes that are open to youth anywhere around the globe. Classes are already growing, and youth from countries all over the world are showing up, making social connections, positively interacting, laughing, and having a blast.
Why Improvisation Excels Online
All the components that make improv so fun and important in a classroom or live workshop are just as present in an online platform. In an online session, you have the opportunity to make social connections through gameplay, movement, engaging your imagination and creativity, taking healthy risks, and laughing. All of this helps in building new neural pathways and strengthening those already in place.
An online setting can even benefit those who may experience social anxiety. Whereas it may be difficult to stand in front of people and engage in an exercise, participating via video conference gives you the option to step out of your comfort zone from within the comfort of your own home and pajamas (if you want!)
How often do you get the opportunity to meet someone from Brazil, someone from China, someone from Sweden, and someone from South Africa – all at the same time? Kidscape is providing a platform for global connection, and the diversity of youth participating in their online improvisation workshops enhances the experience of participating as well as increases the social value of participating.
How it Works
You can visit Kidscape.co to find the links for the classes that are being offered. There are three weekly classes offered for youth ages 6-17 as well as classes being offered to adults and educational professionals looking to build communication tools for online education.
Kidscape is committed to providing everyone the opportunity to connect and socially engage, which is why classes are being offered on a donation basis until May 1st.
All of KidScape Productions camps, classes and workshops draw from modern-day neuroscience and psychology. Each lesson is infused with social-emotional learning, executive functioning, confidence in speaking, and presenting. To learn more about this approach visit our blog.
